The Universal Molecular Identification allows to detect microorganisms present in a sample without any knowledge about which and how many different microorganisms to expect. The detection is independent of culturing, so it displays the direct semi-quantitative state of the microbial community at the time of sample collection.

This approach has many advantages:

  • all microorganisms in the sample may be identified
  • the identification is performed without foreknowledge about the type of microorganisms
  • no distraction or influence of the microbial community by the type of culturing
  • unknown contaminating microorganisms may be classified

AMODIA offers several different variations of universal and group-specific analysis which differ in the respective target genes:

Two application examples for the Universal Molecular Identification are presented here with the analysis of a washing machine and groups of bacteria, respectively. Possible other areas of application are:

  • environmental samples, e.g. waterbody samples, drinking water, soil samples, sediments, biofilms
  • samples from geological measurement stations
  • biogas plants or facilities for the fermentation of mixed populations
  • damages by microbial corrosion
  • industrial filling or coating facilities
  • quality control of equipment, raw materials or products
  • input of contaminations into facilities or products
  • verification of biocides or hygiene measures
  • moulds on wallpapers, wood or in silicone joints
  • medical sample material with mixed infections
  • and many more

The technique allows to identify microbial contaminations subsequently. It can be used as origin for developing an on-site detection system specific for those contaminants.
